Most flooring projects follow the same four steps.
- Measure the room. Write down the length and width of each space. For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles and measure each one.
- Find the area. Use the square footage calculator to get the total in square feet.
- Work out the quantity or cost. Enter the area into the flooring calculator or the tile calculator to see how much to buy, or estimate the price with the hardwood installation price calculator or the carpet installation cost calculator.
- Add extra for waste. Cuts, offcuts and mistakes use up material, so order more than the exact area, then round up to whole boxes.
Flooring basics
Area for a rectangular room is length times width. A room 12 feet by 15 feet is 180 square feet. Rooms with alcoves, closets or an irregular shape are measured in sections and added together.
Waste. A common starting point is 5 to 10 percent extra for a straight layout, and 10 to 15 percent for diagonal, herringbone or other complex patterns. Rooms with many corners need more. Your supplier or installer can tell you what they recommend for your material.
Boxes and units. Flooring is usually sold in boxes that cover a set number of square feet, so check the coverage on the label and round up to full boxes. Carpet is often sold by the square yard, and one square yard is 9 square feet.
Spare material. Keeping an extra box or two from the same batch helps when you need a repair later, because the color and pattern of a new batch can differ.
Cost depends on the material, the area, your subfloor, labor rates and your location. Prices change over time, so treat any estimate as a starting point and get written quotes from local installers. For a price estimate, try the hardwood installation price calculator or the carpet installation cost calculator.
