Roof Pitch Calculator
Find the pitch, angle and rise of a roof from its measurements. Start here, because most other roofing math depends on pitch.
Use the calculator →Roof Calculator
Work out roof area and how much roofing material to order, including an allowance for waste.
Use the calculator →Rafter Calculator
Calculate rafter length from the span and pitch, so you can plan your framing and cuts.
Use the calculator →Roof Replacement Cost Calculator
Get a planning estimate of what it could cost to replace your roof, based on its size and your choices.
Use the calculator →Blown-In Insulation Calculator
Estimate how much blown-in insulation to buy for an attic or other space.

Most roofing projects follow the same order. Each step feeds the next one.
- Measure the pitch. Use the roof pitch calculator to get the slope of your roof. Pitch is written as rise over a 12 inch run, for example 6:12.
- Find the roof area. Use the roof calculator. A steeper roof has more surface than its footprint, so area depends on pitch.
- Plan the framing. If you are building or repairing the structure, use the rafter calculator to get rafter lengths.
- Estimate the cost. Use the roof replacement cost calculator to set a budget before you ask for quotes.
Roofing basics
Pitch is how steep a roof is. A 6:12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. It affects the roof’s surface area, the materials you can use, and how safe it is to work on.
Roof area is the real surface you cover, not the size of the house footprint. Roofing is often sold by the square, and one roofing square covers 100 square feet. Many roofers add an extra 10 to 15 percent for cuts and waste, and more for complex roofs with many valleys and hips.
Rafter length comes from the run and the pitch, using the Pythagorean theorem. Remember to add the overhang if your design has one.
Cost depends on roof size, material, how many layers must be torn off, roof complexity, your location and local labor rates. Prices change over time, so treat any calculator result as a starting point and get written quotes from licensed roofers.

Are these roofing calculators free?
Yes. All Calctoolz calculators are free and need no account.
How accurate are the results?
Results are estimates based on standard formulas and the numbers you enter. Measure carefully, and confirm quantities and local requirements before you buy materials or hire a contractor.
Do I need the roof pitch before I calculate roof area?
Yes, in most cases. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flatter roof with the same footprint, so pitch is needed to get the area right.
How much extra material should I order?
Many roofers add about 10 to 15 percent for waste, and more for roofs with many angles. Ask your supplier or contractor what they recommend for your roof.
Can I use these calculators for a flat roof?
Flat and low-slope roofs use different materials and drainage rules. The calculators give a useful starting figure, but you should confirm details with a roofing professional.
